Out of the Sunken Place: Autistic Masking

Lessons from Get Out's Georgina

The subject in the image projects her honest self. It’s a mirrored reflection of her true state. Her outer projection is perfectly in sync with her inner Autistic self, and in her acceptance of how God made her. She stands out from the crowd in peace and confidence. Accepting yourself and the way you are is not easy, but becomes much less difficult when you know you were made by God. God makes no mistakes, and the way you are is perfectly planned and accounted for. To live in a way that diminishes what God created is a waste of energy, and to attack what God created with critiques from yourself or the world is an insult to our Creator. As an Autistic individual myself, I recognize that constantly masking in a way that the world will accept is not what God wants. He wants me to be in the world, not of it. That means being set apart not only in my actions, but also the way I treat myself. We are all fearfully and wonderfully made!

I read "Out of the Sunken Place" and loved it. Your use of metaphors and symbolism unmasked the mind of a self-aware autistic individual. Your use of non-cliche expressions is also refreshing: "self-abandonment," "repenting,"--for trying to placate the neurotypical world." This is a powerful piece--an autistic person writing about autism rather than someone on the outside looking in.
